Revision: Driving Manoeuvres
Revision material to assist with driving manoeuvres
You can revise the various driving manoeuvres below.
Turn in the Road
Follow these steps to carry out a turn in the road
Location:
Make sure it's a safe, convenient, and legal place to carry out this manoeuvre - avoiding driveways, junctions, and obstacles on the kerb.
Moving Off:
Check all mirrors and blind spots before moving, no signal is required.
Driving Across:
Use clutch control to go very slowly, but turn the steering wheel quickly right, keeping a constant look out for other vehicles and pedestrians. Turn the wheels back to the left as you approach kerb.
Waiting:
Handbrake on and select reverse gear, look all around before moving.
Reversing:
Go back slowly keeping the car slow looking over your left shoulder turning the wheel briskly left. As you get near the kerb look over your right shoulder and turn the steering wheel right.
Waiting:
Handbrake on and select 1st gear, check all about for other road users approaching.
Final Part:
If safe crawl forward slowly turning the wheel briskly right and pull round and straighten up when straight. If any other vehicles approach, stop and give way to them. If you find you are going to hit the kerb, stop and repeat parts 2 and 3 again. If you hit the kerb or do not give way to other road users you will fail.
Reverse Parking
Follow these steps to reverse park
Part 1:
Pull along side the parked car and stop parallel with it. Look all around and if safe reverse back until the end of the side window is level with the end of the parked car, then stop and look all about for any other cars or pedestrians. If safe start moving and turn the steering wheel:
1 TURN LEFT
Part 2:
When you see the black line in the driver's corner of the rear window touch kerb, stop and look all about and if safe start moving and turn the steering wheel:
1 AND A QUARTER RIGHT
Glance in left hand side mirror to see if you need an extra quarter turn right, if too near to the kerb.
Part 3:
When in and straight, stop and look all about and if safe turn the steering wheel:
ANTI-CLOCKWISE TO TOP
If the car is badly positioned, you can pull forward and straighten up then reverse back again to give you enough room to get out.
Reverse Procedure - Tight Corner
Follow these steps to reverse around a tight corner
Part 1:
Check all around and if safe reverse slowly, until you see the black line of side window level with the end of kerb. Stop, look, move and turn:
1 AND A HALF TURNS LEFT
Part 2:
When you see the kerb in the rear window, stop, look, move and turn:
HALF A TURN RIGHT
Part 3:
When you see the red tape in rear window touch the kerb, stop, look, move and turn:
1 TURN RIGHT
Part 4:
Glance in the left-hand side mirror to see if you need a slight turn left to get closer to the kerb. If it goes wrong, you can pull forward and straighten up, then reverse back again. Give way to cars coming up behind you, and if you are blocking the junction pull back round the corner when safe to do so and start again.
Reverse Procedure - Bendy Corner
Follow these steps to reverse around a bendy corner
Part 1:
Look all around and if safe reverse back until you see the end of the kerb in corner of side window. Stop and look over right hand shoulder, if safe start moving and turn the wheel:
1 TURN LEFT
Part 2:
When you see the kerb reappear in the rear window, stop look all about and if safe move and turn the wheel:
A QUARTER TURN RIGHT
Part 3:
When the red tape in the centre of the rear window touches the kerb, stop and look all around, and if safe turn the wheel:
THREE QUARTERS RIGHT
Part 4:
Glance in left hand side mirror to see if you need a slight turn left to get closer to the kerb. If it goes wrong you can pull forward and straighten up, then reverse back again. Give way to cars coming up behind you, and if you are blocking the junction pull back round the corner when safe to do so and start again.
